 Media Studies - Jasmine Stainton

The genre of our film is a thriller, therefore I will be researching other films that fit into the thriller genre.

Jurassic_Park_poster.jpgJurassic Park
Jurassic Park was made in 1993 and had a high profile director and actors. During a tour of the theme park there is a power cut that allows
cloned dinosaurs to escape and cause destruction around the park.
It has an age rating of PG-13 and its main genre is action thriller.
It had a budget of around $63,000,000 (£42,000,000 approx) and made £32,723,932 in its opening weekend. It’s premier in the US was on the 9th June 1993 in Washington DC. It was then released in Brazil, before having its London premier on 15th July 1993.

Unknown-2Taken
Taken was made in 2008 and is high profile Hollywood film featuring famous actors and actresses. A retired CIA agent relies on his former skills to help him save his kidnapped daughter as he travels across Europe. The film was rated PG-13 due to violence, language and drug use. It had a budget of  $25,000,00017,000,000 approx) and made £1,165,986 in it’s opening weekend in the UK. Taken’s main genres are action and thriller. It was released 30th January 2009 in the UK.

I have discovered that the thriller genre is often paired with the action genre, which is something to think about when making our film. By adding action to our film we could make the film appeal to a wider demographic as action is a popular genre. Both films have a high budget and are Hollywood produced films. Although this is not possible for our film, we can look at techniques used such as varying camera angles to mimic the Hollywood style. From researching these two films I can see that PG-13 is a popular rating for a film as it is more appealing to adults and teens, which is our target audience. A PG-13 rating translates to a BBFC rating of 12 or 12A, which I think would be a good rating to give our film so that it appeals to our target audience, but is also appropriate for slightly younger audiences. Both of the posters have a dark coloured background which creates mystery and intrigue. The main focus of both posters is a bright colour, for example the Jurassic Park badge is red, which a black dinosaur skeleton on it, and on the Taken poster, the word ‘Taken’ is written in orange. This draws the audience's attention towards that feature, and doesn't give away too much about the film.
